What Is 18-Gauge Seamless Knitwear?

18-gauge refers to the number of knitting needles per inch—the higher the gauge, the finer and denser the knit. At 18 gauge, fabrics are lightweight, smooth, and refined enough to be worn against the skin. Seamless (whole-garment) knitwear is knitted as one complete piece—body, sleeves, and shoulders shaped directly on the machine—instead of being cut and sewn from separate panels. The result: a premium base layer with no side seams, minimal bulk, and a fit that follows the body naturally.

Why Seamless

  • No side seams— cleaner look, smoother against the skin
  • Less bulk— ideal for fitted base layers, turtlenecks, and fine sweaters
  • Natural fit— engineered shaping follows the body without rigid panels
  • Less waste— knitted to shape, no cut-off fabric
  • Design freedom— ribbing, textures, and branded details knitted directly into the garment

Natural Fibres

Every development starts with yarn. We partner with world-renowned spinning mills across Italy and China—including Consinee, KVSS, Xinao, Millefili, Tollegno 1900, Zegna Baruffa, and Botto Giuseppe.

  • Cashmere — exceptionally soft, ultralight, and insulating
  • Merino wool — soft, breathable, and temperature-regulating; the gold standard for next-to-skin base layers. Sourced directly from premier Australian merino fleece.
  • Cashmere-wool blend — everyday luxury balancing resilience and cloud-like softness
  • Wool-acetate — natural drape with a fluid, cool hand-feel and subtle luster
  • Wool-silk — lightweight with an elegant sheen, tailored for transitional seasons, resort, and travel

Fibre composition, yarn count, color palette, and surface finish are fully customized to your hand-feel, climate specs, and margin targets.

Pilling Resistance, Engineered

All natural fibres can pill under friction—but strong resistance can be engineered. Cawool controls five levers from the start of development:

  1. Yarn selection matched to fibre length and intended garment
  2. Yarn count and blend ratio matched to gauge and silhouette
  3. Stitch density and tension control for a stable surface
  4. Construction that reduces abrasion points
  5. Washing and finishing refined for surface cleanliness

The goal is a base layer that stays smooth through repeated wear.

FAQ

What is 18-gauge seamless knitwear?

A fine, dense knit made on whole-garment machinery. The garment is knitted in one integrated piece rather than assembled from panels, producing a smooth, lightweight result with no side seams.

Is 18-gauge knitwear suitable for base layers?

Yes. The fine, close-knit structure is specifically suited to premium base layers, fitted tops, and lightweight turtlenecks.

What is whole-garment seamless knitting?

Whole-garment knitting forms the garment directly as a three-dimensional knitted piece, reducing the need for conventional cut-and-sew assembly and joining seams.

Is seamless the same as whole garment?

The terms are closely related but not always identical. “Whole garment” describes a specific knitting and construction method, while “seamless” can be used more broadly to describe products with reduced or minimal seams.

Which materials are available?

Australian Merino wool, cashmere, merino–cashmere, wool–acetate, and wool–silk blends from mills including Consinee, Zegna, and Tollegno 1900.

Does seamless knitwear pill?

All natural fibres can pill to some degree. Cawool engineers pilling resistance through yarn selection, stitch density, tension control, construction, and finishing.

Can Cawool provide certifications?

Yes—OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, RWS, SFA, no-mulesing declarations, and BSCI documentation, available upon request subject to yarn selection.

Can this be made as a private-label product?

Yes. Custom development covers yarn, silhouette, colour, fit, labels, and branding.

Do you offer other gauges besides 18?

Yes. 16-gauge and other fine-gauge seamless constructions are available on request, using the same whole-garment process and natural-fibre yarns.
