Introduction
Tongxiang. Puyuan.
If you’ve been in the knitwear industry for more than a few months, you’ve heard these names. They’re not fashion capitals in the traditional sense — there’s no Paris runway here, no international fashion week. What they have is something more powerful: a manufacturing ecosystem unlike anywhere else on earth.
Puyuan, a town within Jiaxing municipality in Zhejiang Province, produces an estimated 30% of China’s total knitted garments — and has done so for over 40 years. It is, by any reasonable measure, the knitwear capital of the world.
But here’s the paradox: most Western fashion brands know almost nothing about it.
This guide changes that. Whether you’re an independent designer looking for your first cashmere production run or an established brand exploring China sourcing for the first time, understanding Puyuan — and knowing how to navigate it — is a genuine competitive advantage.

Why Puyuan? The Geography of Knitwear Excellence
A 40-Year Head Start
Puyuan’s knitting industry began in the 1980s, initially as a cottage industry of hand-operated flatbed machines. Over four decades, it has evolved into a full ecosystem: yarn suppliers, dye houses, pattern makers, trim manufacturers, finishing specialists, and logistics companies all operate within a 30-kilometer radius.
What this means for you: You don’t need to orchestrate a complex supply chain across provinces. Everything is here.
The Numbers
- 4,000+ knitwear-related enterprises in the Puyuan-Tongxiang area
- Annual output value exceeding RMB 100 billion (approx. $14 billion USD)
- Direct employment of 300,000+ workers in the knitwear sector
- Major yarn mills including Erdos, Consinee, and Xinao supply the cluster — Xinao Group is headquartered locally in Tongxiang
Yarn Access
One of Puyuan’s greatest advantages is proximity to China’s finest yarn mills. The town sits within driving distance of:
- Erdos Group (Inner Mongolia) — via established logistics networks
- Consinee Group (Ningbo/Zhejiang) — regional, very accessible
- Xinao Group (Tongxiang, Zhejiang) — based locally within the Puyuan-Tongxiang cluster, direct mill access
For cashmere and cashmere-blend knits, this proximity to top-tier Chinese mills means better pricing, faster sampling, and more flexibility in yarn selection.
What to Source in Puyuan
Not everything is equally advantageous to source here. Here’s a realistic breakdown:
✅ Best For: High-Volume and Mid-Range Knitwear
Puyuan excels at:
- Cashmere and cashmere-blend knits (with the right factory)
- Merino wool and fine wool blends
- Cotton and linen knits (especially summer-weight)
- Standard sweater constructions (crewnecks, cardigans, turtlenecks)
- Textured knits (cable, rib, seed stitch, interlock)
⚠️ Niche Categories — Approach with Caution
- Fully fashioned / zero-waste knitwear — technically possible but requires a specialized factory; not every shop here has this capability
- High-performance technical knits (compression, activewear) — better suited to specialized mills in Guangzhou or Jiangsu
- Very low MOQ luxury pieces (under 50 units) — some factories accommodate, but minimums typically start at 100–150 for commercial production
❌ Not Ideal For
- Leather-trimmed knitwear requiring tanneries (these are concentrated in Guangdong)
- Vegan/organic-certified-only knits (OEKO-TEX GOTS supply chains require more factory vetting)
How to Find the Right Factory in Puyuan
This is where most buyers get stuck — and where they also make the most expensive mistakes.
Step 1: Define Your Requirements Before You Arrive
You cannot vet factories effectively without knowing your own specs. Prepare a complete tech pack before reaching out. At minimum:
- Yarn type and fiber content
- Gauge (stitch density — typically 7gg, 12gg, 14gg, 16gg, or 18gg)
- Construction type (full-fashioned, cut-and-sew, seamless)
- Color and dyelot requirements
- Size range and grading
- Packaging specifications
- Target FOB price per unit
Step 2: Use the Right Channel
| Channel | Best For | Risk Level |
|---|---|---|
| B2B platforms (Alibaba, Made-in-China) | Initial factory discovery and quote comparison | Medium — requires heavy vetting |
| Trade shows (PH Value, Yarn Expo, Intertextile) | Meeting factories face-to-face, building relationships | Low if you do follow-up due diligence |
| Referrals from other brands | Most reliable — someone has vetted the factory for you | Lowest risk |
| Local sourcing agents | Navigation of language, logistics, and culture | Medium — quality varies enormously |
| Direct outreach to Cawool | Small-batch, English-speaking, B2B-focused factory partner | Low — we handle all the complexity |
Step 3: The Factory Visit (What to Look For)
If you visit Puyuan in person, look for:
- Machine gauge range — Do they have the gauge you need?
- Quality control process — Is there a dedicated QC team, or is it afterthought?
- Sample room — Does the factory produce clean, professional samples?
- Worker conditions — Ethical sourcing starts with observation
- Communication — Can they discuss your project in English, or will you need an interpreter?
- Lead time track record — Ask for references from brands they’ve worked with
Step 4: Start Small
Never give a new factory your full order on the first production run. Start with a pilot run of 50–100 units to evaluate quality, communication, and on-time delivery before committing larger quantities.
The Puyuan Production Calendar: Timing Matters
Puyuan factories operate on a seasonal cycle. Understanding this will save you from critical lead-time surprises:
| Phase | Timeline | What’s Happening |
|---|---|---|
| Peak production | September – January | Pre-holiday rush; factories are busy, minimums may increase |
| Slow season | February – April | Post-Chinese New Year ramp-up; best for flexible scheduling |
| New collection prep | May – July | Sampling season; ideal time to start conversations for Fall/Winter |
| Pre-peak booking | August | Factory booking for holiday production — book now or wait |
Pro tip: The Chinese New Year shutdown (typically late January to mid-February) creates a 4–6 week production gap. Plan your lead times accordingly — especially if you’re launching a Spring collection.
What to Watch Out For: Red Flags
🚩 Red Flag 1: Quotes That Are Too Low
In a competitive market like Puyuan, rock-bottom prices often mean corners cut — on yarn quality, finishing labor, or QC. If a quote is 30% below the market rate, it’s probably too good to be true.
🚩 Red Flag 2: No Sample Capability or Sample Room
Any factory worth working with should be able to produce a sample within 2–3 weeks of receiving your tech pack. No sample room = no production quality assurance.
🚩 Red Flag 3: Vague Communication About Minimums
If a factory won’t clearly state their MOQ in writing before you share your design, walk away. This is a tactic used to attract buyers and then pressure them into larger orders later.
🚩 Red Flag 4: No Third-Party Inspection Options
Reputable factories in Puyuan will accommodate third-party inspection (SGS, Bureau Veritas, QIMA) without resistance. Resistance to inspection is a major red flag.
🚩 Red Flag 5: Cashmere Claims Without Certification
If you’re sourcing cashmere, ask for fiber composition certificates and country-of-origin documentation. The cashmere market has documented cases of fiber adulteration. Never source pure cashmere without certification.
Puyuan vs. Other Chinese Knitwear Clusters
| Region | Specialty | MOQ Range | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puyuan, Zhejiang | General knitwear, wool, blends | 150–300 | Volume production, variety, cost efficiency |
| Guanlan, Shenzhen | High-end, fashion-forward knits | 100–200 | Premium positioning, trend sensitivity |
| Dongguan, Guangdong | Technical knits, sportswear | 300–500 | Performance fabrics, compression |
